Welcome our newest Chicago guest writer, Grant Allen. Mr. Allen is an amateur paranormal investigator, author and gamer. He has been slowly acquiring useless or out of date skills in the hope of surviving the zombie/robot/monkey/alien apocalypse!
Upon seeing the splendidly absurd Machine Girl something happens to
the human mind. It feels like the part of your brain that decides weather or not something is "over the top" just gives up and implodes to a tiny, withered husk. Well if you are lucky enough to have had that experience, and you enjoyed it, then you MUST see Tokyo Gore Police.
Helmed by Yoshihiro Nishimura (The special effects guru of Machine Girl) TGP plays up to the effects junkie crowd with a level of glee and abandon rarely seen. I hesitate to call it splatter-punk because it honestly goes beyond even that in some spots. I suppose I should stop rambling and get to a synopsis.
In a dystopian near future the entire police force of Tokyo has gone corporate, and, as in all dystopian near futures, that means they are now murderous and brutal. You would be too if your enemies were a bunch of criminals who can grow weapons out of any wounds or severed limbs inflicted on them. That sentence probably didn't make much sense so I will explain. Say you are a cop who has shoot to kill authorization and you shoot a junkie in the face, blowing his head off. In this movie that junkie proceeds to grow a wood chipper that shoots rockets out of his neck hole and starts to kill you and your buddies. Yeah, that's the kind of movie we are dealing with.
These criminals with flesh-crafting are called "Engineers", and our main character is a cop whose job is to kill them. Engineer hunting can be a tricky business, especially when they start hunting you back. We get a conspiracy, some psychological trauma, and a wee bit of revenge to round out this bloody and violent show.
All in all, the whole thing plays like Robocop VS the last ten minutes of Akira. If that doesn't sound awesome then this movie isn't for you, but for those who are a fan of ridiculous gore scenes played for laughs you must see this movie. The final battle alone makes me giggle every time I even think about it. This film is an exercise in making the audience cringe for all the right reasons and laugh for all the wrong ones. I would recommend this movie highly to anyone; even if it's not up your ally it is still an experience you will never forget. Watch it with friends for added effect.
PS. Warning, this movie may cause a severe phobia of leather upholstered chairs.
